We experienced a number of problems and had many concerns regarding our mother’s medical treatment. They are important to all cancer patients!! They are also important for medical and health care professionals to review – in order to better understand how to assist ones patients.
We found that the oncologists who treated our mother were not open and honest in being forthcoming with information. They were not clear in helping us make a decision on whether or not our mother should go on hospice or palliative care. They were unable to explain the distinction between paliative and hospice care. They weren’t aware of the visiting physicians group that we could have utilized, instead of running to the emergency room whenever our mother was in a critical state. She was too weak and stressed to face the “horrors” of the Emergency Room (ER) each time – for her she went through it six times!! There is no reason for cancer patients, particularly the elderly, to be subjected to the ER, where sensitivity and compassion is usually lacking.
These are the issues we will be “discussing” – we open these issues to the medical and health care community. Communication is essential if we are to work together to improve the medical system regarding the treatment and care of cancer patients. We hope that they will provide us with their prespective regarding these problems/issues.
