What is the Supportive Care Exchange (SCE)

It’s all about a community which is sharing, caring, aging, helping others, taking responsibility, providing resources and information regarding terminal illness and parental care, finding much needed answers to the plethora of problems we are faced with; in the end focusing on quality of life.

This blog was created by two sisters, Cheryl Silverman and Sandra Mangarella, who recently lost both parents to cancer in less than two years.  These two sisters have decided to share their experiences with people encountering similar circumstances – parents afflicted with a grave illness and unable to take care of themselves.  We learned so much in these past few months and hope we can help others benefit from our experiences and avoid the problems and issues we faced.  We hope we can make a very difficult situation much easier for you.

We aim to provide you with personal stories, articles pertaining to cancer and the medical community, listings and reviews of available resources, suppliers, and organizations, and a forum for sharing the problems and issues that we are all faced with.  Our accounts are based on true experiences and the information we place on this blog are factual and include articles/surveys taken from reputable sources. We have done the research – it is up to you to decide what is valuable and relevant for your personal situation.  We encourage your feedback and reviews – which can serve to help others.

Now more than ever, there is a greater need to provide supportive care for all cancer patients, particularly the elderly who have specific needs which need to be considered and addressed.  Supportive care is vital to the well-being and success of every patient.   However, not enough has been done in this regard, particularly among geriatric patients.  We encourage others to share with us – the supportive care services they have discovered so they can be shared with others, as well as “rated” whether or not they are adequate, beneficial or need improvement.    There has been “talk” addressing these concerns – but seemingly that is all it is…just talk.

Most important we will be addressing whether cancer treatment is necessary for the elderly.  It is the opinion of my sister and I that it is definitely not!   This issue will be dealt with in greater depth on this blog.  We encourage input from our readers regarding this and other topics.  We want  to hear from  the medical community, patients, caregivers, and their families.
